At U$.$S$.$ Customs and Border Protection, Border Patrol Agents receive training in the use of less$-$lethal weapons. In this training, Less$-$Lethal Training Safety Officers $($LLTSOs$)$ are used to augment safety requirements. LLTSOs do not carry any Less$-$Lethal Instructor $($LLI$)$ certification and therefore cannot take the place of certified LLIs. A certified LLI is required to conduct any and all training in which LLTSOs are involved.
