Background Information
You are the Human Resources Manager for Goldstein World Domination Enterprises. As the
company has grown, you have decided that it makes sense to track employee data in a relational
database. You have instructed one of your employees to build a database in Microsoft Access.
Unfortunately, the employee is not the sharpest tool in the shed, and does not completely
understand the concept of a relational database. He has constructed one table containing all
employee data in the Access file HR GWDE. It does not appear that he understands the nature
of a relational database.
Instructions
The file that your employee has constructed is in the Hands-On Assignments folder in the
Content section of the course D2L site. Download the file and complete the following.
1) Fix the Access file that you have downloaded by creating the appropriate number of
tables. (HINT: You may find it necessary to delete some columns in the initial table do
this as you would in Microsoft Excel)
2) For each field in your tables, make sure that:
a) The data type is appropriate
b) A description is provided
c) The field size is correct. Necessary field sizes are as follows:
Field Name Field Size
Last Name 50
First Name 50
Department Location 50
Department Name 50
Department Code 4
Project Name 50
Project Code 4
Project Manager 50
3) For each of your tables, identify the field that is the most appropriate primary key and
designate them as such in Access.
4) Link your tables together in Access to form a relational database.
