When it comes to interpreting the constitution there are two camps. Originalism or strict construction as it is sometimes called holds that Americans are restricted to interpreting the constitution by its literal meanings as the original authors understood them. Under this view the constitutions meaning does not change with time. On the other hand pragmatists view the constitution as a living breathing document which speaks to each generation a little differently. Under this view pragmatism requires the constitutions interpreters to bring in their own background, context, ideas, and judgements as they decipher the meaning of the document.
