Base on the information below, what does one need to know in order to define a "game"?

What is Game Theory?Game theory is the study of games in the mathematical sense. Basically, there are situations where there are multiple participants. "The outcome of the decision any individual makes is dependent on the decision thatindividual decisionandthe decisions made by all of the other participants" (What is game theory? n.d.).

According to the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy, "Game theory is the study of the ways in which interacting choicesofeconomic agentsproduceoutcomes with respect to the preferences(orutilities) of those agents, where the outcomes in question might have been intended by none of the agents."

Possibly an easier way to explain this is "Game theory models the interaction between multiple players in any scenario with specific rules and quantifiable consequences. One can use this theory to analyze situations involving various decisions, limited resources, different outcomes resulting from different choices, and the possibility of competition or collaboration between players" (Team, 2022).

Game Theory and Linear Programming

Analyzing game situations is a practical application of linear programming.

Operations research focuses on building models to find optimal solutions to real-life business problems. Game theory is also a tool of operations research to solve various problems related to decision-making. "Game theory and linear programming are closely related since any computing method devised for one of these theories can be used to solve problems arising in the other" (Ighodae & Ekoko, 2010).

"It turns out that every game problem can be computed by converting it into a related linear programming problem, and every linear programming problem can be artificially converted into a game problem which as a result leads to a super linear programming problem" (Ighodae & Ekoko, 2010).

Game Theory Limitations

There are a number of limitations to game theory such as (Team, 2022):

  1. The assumption that a game's participants know about their payoffs but not others' payoffs
  2. The problem-solving methods involving mixed strategies are extremely complicated
  3. One cannot analyze every competitive problem using this concept
  4. People can act irrationally
