Research title Effects of COVID-19 Pandemic and Small Fast-food Businesses in Cape Town: A Quantitative Study. Background In response to the global Covid-19 pandemic that reached South African (SA) shores on 5 March 2020, the SA government announced a National State of Disaster on 15 March 2020, followed by a five-week, nationwide hard lockdown which commenced on 27 March 2020 Arndt, Davies, Gabriel, Harris, Makrelax, Robinson, Levy, Sinbanegavi. Seventer. Anderson, (2020). Since then, South Africa has seen many levels of lockdown, with restrictions tightened and eased as the country entered and exited various "waves" of the pandemic Oyenubi, Kollamparambil (2021). Some economists over the world compared the effects of the global lockdowns due to the pandemic as similar to the Great Depression Fairlie (2020). A study conducted by Bartika, Bertrandb. Cullens, Glaeserd, Lucac& Stanton, (2020) revealed that most businesses were financially fragile and any business with expenses exceeding 10 thousand dollars only had the cash of two weeks at a time. During the SA hard lockdown all non-essential businesses had to close their doors; this meant that all fast-food establishments could not operate for full five weeks Arndt, Davies, Gabriel, Harris, Makrelax, Robinson, Levy, Simbanegavi, Seventer, Anderson, (2020). Large fast-food chains had enough capital, assets, insurance, and the like to keep them afloat, whereas smaller independent fast-food entities that depend on daily customers' purchases to survive, are more vulnerable to be affected by the lockdown Fairlie (2020). Research problem The lack of knowledge about the pandemic and the number of research done in this field was so little due to the quick spread of the virus. Therefore, the small fast-food industry faced a huge issue which could affect various aspects of the national economy. As a result, studying and understanding the nature and factors of whether the pandemic had serious effects on small fast-food business will provide important outcomes Bartika. Bertrandk. Cullens Glaeserd, Lucas, Stanton, (2020). This study analyses the following data before and after the pandemic: the number of customers per month, sales per month, and the monthly profit range of the business. Perhaps a study which investigates the effects of the pandemic and how small fast-food businesses should relate to such circumstances could initiate a foundation of solving this problem Bundy, Pfarrer, Short, Coombs, (2020). Relevance As an Economics student, this study helps to understand how the Covid-19 pandemic affected small fast-food businesses in Cape Town particularly; however, it is envisaged that the results of the study could be extended to small fast-food businesses in general. It also would provide insight into how the effects of the pandemic played a role in changing the structure of the small fast-food industry within a very short of time.
