Based on this interview using the Integrity versus Despair stage from Erikson's theory, discuss these questions.

Scenario:

A mother who is currently in hermid-50s. She dropped out of high school and started herfamily early. Now twenty, twenty-plus years later, she got her GED, graduated with an Associate degree in Liberal arts, and now started her bachelor's degree in nursing. This makes her the idealcandidate to reflect onthe Integrity versus Despair stage.

Interview:

What was it like building a family at such a youngage?

It was hard. I got pregnant at age 16, and I also got married because of my religion, it was not to have a child if you were not married. I was also a child myself, some would say. But knew I and to make the best of the situation.

What was it like going back to school after so manyyears?

I was terrified and did not know what to expect. Here I am a fifty-plus year old sitting in a classroom with children who are thirty plus years younger than me. I felt embarrassed, I felt judged. I was so old school I was lacking all the basic skills of how to use a computer. I did not understand a lot and I hadquestions. Some days I felt like my teachers were frustrated with me because they constantly had to repeat the lesson so I could get it. I was holding back the class.

How might youhave done things differently nowcompared to then?

Honestly, I do not know. I try not to dwell on the past.

Are you happy with where you are right now inyourlife?

Yes, I am happy. I raised four wonderful children who are now adults and have good jobs. They all gave me a chance to be a grandma. Also, I have achieved a great deal. I got my GED, then went to college and graduated with my Associate degree in Liberal Arts. And now I am currently enrolled in a Bachelor of Nursing program. So, yes, I am happy and have much to be thankful for.

What advice would you give to people your agewho have decided to go back toschoolto get theirdegrees?

That they should take a refresher course on how to use a computer, or a writing and math class. Also, do not be scared because it messes with your mental state, which leads you to start doubting yourself. You need to let go of the negative thoughts for positive thoughts to flow. Lastly always remind yourself of why you are doing this.
