Based on your client profile, formulate a problem statement that leads to a systems thinking approach to problem solving.

Challenge area: The challenge area selected is autonomous vehicles. The client profile will include the relevance of autonomous vehicles in relation to the client, and the client's perspectives and goals as they relate to autonomous vehicles. This information leads to the identification of key problems, as perceived by the client.

Client Profile:

The client organization to be used is Tesla. Tesla has a vested interest in autonomous vehicles as the company is striving to achieve the first fully autonomous vehicle on the market (Dikmen & Burns, 2017). Currently Tesla has semi-autonomous vehicles on the market with autopilot features such as auto park and auto lane change. Even though semi-autonomous vehicles are on the road today, fully autonomous vehicles are at least 5 - 10 years away from implementation (Teece, 2018). However, despite the timeline and potential benefits associated with autonomous vehicles, there are challenges within this industry that Tesla has not yet addressed.

Challenges within the autonomous vehicle industry that have the potential to cause problems for Tesla include the following: traffic management, infrastructure, liability insurance issues, police and emergency services considerations, radar interference and the ability to drive safely in all weather conditions (Dikmen & Burns, 2017). For the adoption of autonomous vehicles to be considered, there is a need to address the technical elements associated with assessing the functionality of the vehicles before the broader scale problem areas can be addressed. With this information in mind, we can narrow down a problem area to be the legal considerations with autonomous vehicles. The legal consideration scope cannot be fully resolved until technical issues are addressed with autonomous vehicles. Traffic management and infrastructure will not be addressed until autonomous vehicles prove to be a viable option for the everyday individual. Liability insurance concerns and police and emergency response considerations all would entail other problems to be resolved first. This leaves the potential for radar interference and the ability to drive safely in all weather conditions as the two potential choices for key problem areas. If radar interference is a problem, a vehicle cannot drive safely regardless of weather conditions. Thus, Tesla's key problem area is the potential for radar interference in autonomous vehicles.
