"Hello Class, In 1963 The Beach Boys had their first top 10 hit Surfin' USA, which was thought to be the work of Brian Wilson, it was discovered that Brian had used the melody from Chuck Berry's Sweet Little Sixteen. Although Wilson did not believe he was doing anything wrong by re-writing it into his creation, He also did not give co-writer credit to Barry. Chuck Berry also filed suit against John Lennon for one of the Beatles songs around the same time. I do think that stealing other people's work is wrong, there is a difference between actively stealing it and paying tribute towards someone, if credit is given where credit is due. Going back to the Beatles, George Harrison was also liable for copyright infringement for the song My Sweet Lord, which was his first solo single, George unconsciously used the melody of the song He's So fine by Ronald Mack. According to the odyssey, "Five years later, the judge announced that he believed that the plagiarism wasn't on purpose." The lawsuit ended up growing George Harrison's fanbase, he ended up having to pay $587,000. It was also argued that the musical element was limited and repetitive so the music only "came alive" in the hands of specific performers. I think having multiple people review the work before George released it might have had the chance to catch this incident and potentially save him the money, even if it was done unconsciously, it was still wrong."
