Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is a major issue in todays corporate world. Many companies worldwide devote significant resources to social responsibility. Pressure from global citizens has made the idea of corporate social responsibility a competitive advantage. Many consumers will purchase products and services from an organization if they believe it is a good corporate citizen. This has forced corporations in many industries to be accountable to society as a whole.

Instructions:

In groups of four (maximum), perform a social audit on an industry. You are required to choose four (4) for-profit corporations from the same industry and evaluate each organizations social performance based on independent research. Each person from the group will evaluate one corporation. As a group, form a consensus as to which organization is the best Corporate Citizen within the chosen industry.

Each group member is responsible for preparing a snapshot of their chosen organization. The group will present their findings and their decision on the best corporate citizen.

When evaluating each corporation, it is important to ask which of the four strategies each company uses in terms of social responsibility: proactive (shows leadership in CSR); accommodative (involved to some degree); defensive (do minimum required); obstructionist (fight social demands). To determine what strategy a company employs, ask the following questions:

1) What is the organization doing to meet its economic responsibility?

a. Companys mission statement and corporate values

b. Is the company profitable?

c. What is the company doing to meet its mission

2) What is the organization doing to meet its legal responsibility?

a. Has the company broken any laws?

b. Do they have any guidelines or controls to ensure they meet legal requirements (like a legal department?)

3) What is the organization doing to meet its ethical responsibility?

a. CSR is ensuring that you are meeting the needs of all stakeholders, including employees.

b. List any benefit programs provided by the company

c. Describe any wellness (e.g. gym/pool onsite, health club memberships, ergonomic work spaces, etc) programs

4) What is the organization doing to meet its discretionary responsibility?

a. Does the organization have any programs/initiatives that benefit the local community or greater society-describe at least two

b. Does the organization have any programs/initiatives of the company to reduce waste, use renewable resources, preserve the environment, reduce emissions, etc.

c. Describe any other employee support programs (e.g. paid volunteer days)
