This chapter deals with one of the most challenging areas for supervisors: motivating employees. This exercise will help you develop a comprehensive list of motivating methods on which to draw when faced with employees whom you feel are not performing to their full potential.
Figure shows several motivational methods. Drawing on what you have learned about motivation in this class and elsewhere, list methods, techniques, and strategies that can serve as a source of ideas on how to motivate people.
CHAPTER ELEVEN: Motivating Employees
For the purposes of this exercise, do not be concerned about the economic impact of your ideas or a plan for carrying them out. For example, if you suggest a bonus to reward your employees for good performance, there is no need to provide a formula for computing the bonus. At the same time, however, do not make ridiculous suggestions that would not make good business sense, such as suggesting that you reward all employees and their families with a twoweek allexpensespaid vacation to Bermuda.
