But it does strike me that Antigone has been one of the most popular Greek plays, at least in America , through the late 20th and now early 21st centuries. One sees college and high school theatre groups performing it quite regularly, much more so, it seems to me, than many of the other Greek tragedies. Why do you suppose that should be? Why does this play speak to so many contemporary Americans? How do we, as Americans, face conflicts very similar to those in the play? I mean, for most of us, the issue of how the dead are to be buried isn't such a big deal, but how are the larger issues really very contemporary?
