By looking at the title my initial thoughts were that the chapter would discuss how to ensure patient safety in maintained. I also wrote down security and moral values of healthcare professionals when providing care to patients. Reading this chapter, I learned about the definition of law in healthcare and how it can affect an organization if these laws are violated. I also learned about the judgement and decisions that can lead to lawful violations which can harm yourself as well as your place of work. According to Tipton (2015), negligence and malpractice to a patient can be legal issues that can affect health care professionals and an organization. In health care, there are so many state laws and regulations that you must follow in order to be in compliance. When providing standard of care, health care professionals need to ensure that they are following medical standard guidelines in order to be in compliance. For example, in my place of work, we have a zero tolerance for violations to the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), and our legal and compliance team provide yearly trainings on the importance of HIPAA. The chapter also discussed the responsibility that we have in repaying our student debt back once school is completed. It also focused on the importance of learning your employee rights when entering the workforce. The chapter concentrated on ensuring that healthcare professionals continue with course development that will assist them with maintaining their licensing and credentials. The section that reinforced the difference between professional and personal relationships was very helpful with identifying how to build working relationships with patients and co-workers, (Tipton, 2015).
