In" The downside of legalization: More potheads," Margaret Wente bemoans the legalization of marijuana in Canada. Wente considers marijuana a dangerous drug. She talks about people known to her who lost their jobs, houses, and families because of their addiction to weed. Because marijuana got legalized in Canada, many people think it a harmless if not even wholesome substance. These days, the story of marijuana seems a happy one, filled with financial opportunity for anybody smart enough to cash in on the action. The cannabis market in Canada is projected to reach more than $7 billion in 2019. How did not get sanitized? Keith Humphreys, a professor of psychology at Stanford University, believes, first, people started to think of marijuana laws as cruel and unfair to kids caught with a joint. Later, medical marijuana promised a cure for every disease and made pot respectable and legitimate. Today, even Shoppers Drug Mart has a licence to sell it. However, marijuana is not harmless. Approximately 10 per cent of users develop persistent short term memory problems called "cannabis use disorder." Cannabis is addictive. Legalization normalizes it, and normalization inevitably increases the user base. In Ontario, about 40 per cent of kids will have tried it by Grade 12. Among users, the 9 per cent rate of dependence rises to 16 per cent for those who start in adolescence. Justin Trudeau assures us that a controlled and regulated market will reduce access among youth, but only very nave people may think marijuana use among teenagers will magically decline with legalization. Whether society likes it or not, legalization is going to create more potheads.
