How to Respond to, and Combat, Misinformation
Assignment Introduction: The topics in this Unit concern misinformation. Misinformation is false and/or inaccurate information communicated regardless of an intention to deceive. While misinformation is most recognizable in its extreme manifestations (for example, conspiracy theories), its also prevalent in more common/everyday forms of reporting (e.g. speculating about a persons background, embellishing or omitting details, etc.). The readings and viewing assignments this week suggest that misinformation is both an ethical and a political issue; while the spread of misinformation is generally unethical, it is also political, as socially vulnerable communities are more frequently the targets of misinformation. Recognizing and combatting misinformation is, therefore, a social justice imperative. In this assignment, you will reflect on the things we do to recognize and combat misinformation.
Assignment Directions:
For this reflection, please respond to the following prompts:
-
How do recognize/identify and respond to misinformation?
-
What is something you know for sure about misinformation and the impact it has had on vulnerable communities?
-
How are you impacted on a day-to-day basis of misinformation? Your family, friends, peers, etc.
-
What are your strategies for combatting misinformation? In your daily life, in your community?
