Week Two Scenario

I was having a problem with administration at work, so I decided to reach out to my old principal, asking him about other positions within the network I currently work in regarding higher pay and better benefits because he is still well-connected with people here in my city. I was faced with a decision regarding whether or not to accept a job offer from a well-known school in Kentucky with one of my ex-principals. On the one hand, the job came with a higher salary and better benefits than my current position. However, it required relocating to a different city, which would mean leaving behind my friends and family and church family. This decision was particularly challenging because I was emotionally attached to my current support system. I would have to say in this scenario; narrow framing played a role. I was mainly focusing on the immediate benefits of the new job, such as the higher salary and improved benefits. I failed to consider the broader aspects, such as the impact on my social connections and overall happiness. After taking into consideration the opportunity, I decided to stay and pursue higher education that would help me grow as an individual in my career of choice.

By narrowly framing my decision, I only considered a limited perspective, which prevented me from fully assessing the situation.

Last week scenario

My scenario was about reaching out to one of my old principals for a better-paying position because he still has connections in my network. On the other hand, I was faced with a decision regarding whether or not to accept a job offer from a well-known school in Kentucky with another one of my old principals. In my scenario, there were ethical considerations, when I reached out to my old principal to inquire about other positions with higher pay and better benefits. Looking at my scenario. If my old principal is still well-connected within the network that I currently work in, there could be potential conflicts of interest if he is involved in the hiring process for the positions that I am interested in. It would be essential to ensure that the hiring process remains fair, unbiased, and free from any favoritism.

Applying Heath and Heath (2013) three techniques

Zoom out the zoom in, this technique encourages me to shift between a broad and narrow perspective. By zooming out, I was able to see the bigger picture and the potential consequences of my decision within my personal life and relationships. Then, by zooming in I would be able to focus on the immediate benefits and challenges of the new job offer.

Ooching involves conducting small experiments to test the waters before making a big commitment. I could have tried spending some time in Kentucky, visiting the school and the city, to get a feel for what life there would be like, gain a better understanding of the new environment, and whether it aligns with my values and preferences. This would provide me with first-hand experiences with helping me to a more knowledgeable decision.

Consider the Opposite this technique prompts you to explore the opposite of your initial inclination. Instead of looking for reasons to accept the new job offer, you deliberately seek reasons to decline it. By considering the opposite, I may have realized that my current job, despite the lower pay, offers a strong support system and a sense of belonging. I might recognize the value of these non-monetary benefits and how leaving them behind could impact my overall well-being
