Many villagers depend on shallow wells or surface water sources that are often contaminated by waste, agricultural runoff, and seasonal flooding. These environmental problems pollute water and damage soil quality, making it harder for communities to grow crops or stay healthy. The environment and this issue affect each other because when water is polluted, it harms both people and ecosystems, which in turn worsens poverty. Wealth plays a large role too. Wealthier urban areas have piped and treated water, while poorer rural regions depend on wells or boreholes that frequently break down. In Nigeria, only 26.5% of the population has access to improved drinking water and sanitation, showing how deep this inequality runs.
