As I mentioned in the lecture, learning to write screenplays yourself can be very beneficial... especially since most filmmakers today start out making indie films. One thing to keep in mind is that professional screenwriters don't just sit down and write a polished script from start to finish. They often take a year (or more) to write a feature-length script. During this time, they do a lot of rewriting...10-15 times is common ...trying to improve the script with each pass. Students are often surprised at how much scripts change from draft to draft. I think it's very important to see that writing is a process...not a single event. So... For homework, read an early draft of a screenplay for a film that you've seen and know very well. The earlier the draft of the script, the better. Type up a list of at least 10 specific differences between the early draft and the final film that you've seen. For example: 1. In the script she owned a cat. In the film it was a dog. 2. Her best friend, Julie, was in the script but not in the film. If you read an early enough draft (like first, second, third) you'll probably find 10 differences on just the first couple of pages! Keep reading, though...you'll be amazed at how much they change
