The Lightbeam connections show how many sites are collecting data as you're browsing the Internet and the results were kind of astonishing, especially considering this was all done in matter of minutes, let alone how much data we generate and have collected each day. I knew a lot of data points were generated and collected when I browsed, but seeing it visualized is something else entirely. I was especially surprised by how many third parties post their stories to Yahoo. Each one of those clicks links you to so many other data collection points that in the visualization, it took the award for most connections made with 3rd parties by a wide margin. It definitely made me consider other ways in which clicking on things without thinking can be potentially harmful, or at least revealing.
When you turn on the Do Not Track feature, the data collection get less heavy. Yahoo was still the largest but it wasn't even close to what it looked like before. I will say I'm a pretty careful Internet browser as it stands. I never click on ads or visit unsecured websites, but even now it makes me reconsider how MANY links I click when shopping on Amazon or something, because even if that data is ultimately pretty harmless, it doesn't make me feel much better about having these webs of my shopping and browsing habits, which are honestly a representation of my life online. It feels sinister in a way that I don't like. Definitely going to turning tracking off and paying more attention to every link I follow.
