Case 3: Dell is a computer company sells laptops, desktop computers, servers and many computer peripheral devices with different configurations. Dell had nearly 25 million industrial customers with different needs for various devices with complicated configurations. The prices of products purchased were having discounts based on the nature of the customer and long-term relationship with the company. The sales team of the company used spreadsheet to calculate prices to their customers which was taking more than 4to 5 hours to generate a bill. The company had an ERP system but did not have a single integrated database that has the prices of all the products. The problem was, there were many errors in the manual pricing that has resulted in reduction of profit of the company. The ordering of the products was delayed due to the errors in calculation of prices. To add more to the problem every day new products were added to company. The industrial and individual customers had different type of requirements and configurations for their business needs. The sales team was using excel spread sheet to make the configurations and prices for all the dell customers. It was tedious process to the sales executive to prepare the invoices. In some markets dell sold the products at a very low profit margin as the competition is very high but the certain markets were favorable so they charged relatively high prices.
