CASE DESCRIPTION
The primary purpose of this case study is for Systems Analysis and Design, Systems Development, and Database courses. The primary learning objective is for students to integrate the knowledge they have gathered from class discussions and readings and apply the knowledge to the development of a computer information systems solution for a small business. Students examine realistic dialog and Interview Notes, as well as existing documents. For Systems Analysis and Design courses, the students should be able to follow this realistic case study of a smalf car detailing business and conduct the planning, analysis, and design phases of the System Development Life Cycle (SDLC) using either a traditional or object-oriented approach. Deliverables would include process and data diagrams and modeling. and user interface designs, and should require approximately 12-15 hours to complete.
CASE SYNOPSIS
Professor Bausley is a computer information systems professor at the local university, receives a call regarding a service appointment she had placed with a local car detailing shop. During the conversation, she determined that the car detailing shop could greatly benefit by using a computerized system to track customer appointments. She discusses the idea with the students in her Systems Analysis and Design undergraduate course. Professor Bausley brings her students to the shop when she brings her car to the shop, and they start interviewing the owner about his requirements.
CASE
Professor Bausley receives a phone call from Walter Schultz, the owner of Foothills Auto Spa. Mr. Schultz stated he had a couple of questions about the Professor's upcoming service appointment at the shop.
"Hi, Mr. Schultz. Sure, whiat do you need?" responded Professor Bausley.
"First, did you say you wanted the Ceramic Coating? Also, did you want the Interior Scrubbing and Brushing and did you Steam Cleaning?" asked Mr, Schultz.
"I thought you had written all those details down when I talked to you last week," answered Professor Bausley. "Let me see if I can find my notes. Did my appointment not get scheduled?"
'Well, yes and no. To be honest, I didn't have anything to write with when I took your service appointment request, but I thought I could remember everything. I actually ended up forgetting about your appointment request until this morning when I noticed the calendar didn't have an appointment for the 2 PM hour block. I apologize, and I will put a rush on it, so you should get your confirmation email by the end of the day."
"Ok, I guess it is a good thing you remembered. I needed the following: exterior wash and dry, vacuuming in the trunk, interior scrubbing and brushing. glass cleaning, and paint claying."
"Thanks!" said Mr. Schultz. "I need to figure out a better way to keep track of orders. Things are just so busy, and I can't find the time to get everything organized."
"Well, if you are able to get my vehicle done in the next few days, I might be able to help you develop a more efficient way to keep track of your service appointments," offered Professor.Bausley.
"That's a deal. What do you have in mind?" asked Mr. Schultz.
7 think some of the students in my Systems Analysis and Design course should be able to develop an automated system which will help you with your customers and service appointments. L can ask them to meer with you when my car is ready so they can start to get an understanding of your business and the information you need to maintain,"
"Sounds great-"thanks, again!" replied Mr. Schultz.
Professor Bausley met with the CIS students later that week, and when they went to pick up the professor's car, the students were ready to interview Mr. Schultz and start thinking of a system solution. After the meeting they compiled their notes and developed the following detailed requirements.
