Case Project 3-1: Set Up Ubuntu Server in a VM

In Chapter 2, Case Project 2-1, you created a virtual network using Oracle

VirtualBox or Windows 8 Client Hyper-V. In this case study, you create a third

VM in your virtual network and install Ubuntu Server in the VM. You also learn how to use some Linux commands. In the next chapter, youll install an FTP server in

Ubuntu Server and make FTP services available to other computers in your network.

Using the same computer that you used in Case Projects 1-1 and 1-2 (which should have Oracle

VirtualBox or Client Hyper-V installed), follow these steps:

1. Go to ubuntu.org and download the Ubuntu Server OS to your hard drive. The file

that downloads is an ISO file.

2. Open the Oracle VM VirtualBox Manager or Hyper-V Manager. Following the directions

in the Chapter 1 Case Projects, create a new VM named VM40. Mount the ISO

file that contains the Ubuntu Server download to a virtual DVD in your VM.

Ubuntu Server is only available as a 64-bit OS. To install a 64-bit guest OS in a

VM, the host OS must also be 64-bit.

3. Start up the VM and install Ubuntu Server, accepting all default settings. Be sure to

write down your Ubuntu host name, Ubuntu username, and password. When given

the option, decline to install any extra software bundled with the OS.

4. After you restart the VM, Ubuntu Server launches, which does not have a GUI interface.

You should see the shell command interface, as shown in Figure 3-26.

5. The shell shows the shell prompt, which usually includes your username and current

directory followed by a $. First, enter your username and press Enter. Then enter your

password and press Enter. Youre now logged on to your Ubuntu Server.

6. Practice using Ubuntu Server by trying out the commands in Table 3-14. As you do

so, youll examine the directory structure, create a new directory, and put a blank

file in it.
