Case study 2 Intercultural conflict

It was dark by the time Chris drove into the narrow street only to find that parked cars lined both sides, making two-way traffic impossible. Visitors were arriving, and a group of people were entering his neighbours house. Chris saw his own house and carefully turned right into his driveway, narrowly missing the open-hatched SUV vehicle that was parked in front of his house and very close to his driveway.

Chris stepped out of his car and decided to talk to the owner of the SUV. Unable to identify the driver, Chris said loudly, Excuse me, would you mind moving your car away from my driveway please? I will need to reverse my car out of my driveway soon.

A large, male Pacific Islander from across the street replied: You have plenty of room to get out!

Annoyed.

Chris said: I will need to reverse out and cannot turn the car to go down the street.

A woman responded: Sorry, I will move my car there is plenty of room.

Chris was relieved, and said, Thanks, I did not want to hit you.

In an angry voice, the Pacific Islander said, Cmon, lets go, here and now!
