CASE STUDY #3: Between a Rock and a Hard Place Grace did so well as a supervisor that upper management invited her to attend an all-day management workshop. When she showed up for work the following day her boss, Mr. Adams, called her into his office and questioned her harshly about the behavior of her employees. Knowing Grace was absent, Mr. Adams had dropped by her office and found her employees talking and laughing loudly. Grace, feeling let down by her staff, told Mr. Adams it would not happen again and on the following day came down hard on everyone at a meeting. Then, after checking the situation, Grace discovered that it was one of her employees' birthday and a few of their customers had stopped by to wish the employee a happy birthday.
