Case Study 4 (10 Marks)
Mr. Robbin is working as the manager of Sheraton Hotel, which is one of the best hotels in the United States. Recently, the management of Sheraton Hotel opened a new branch in India. As Robbin is the most experienced employee, he is transferred to India as the manager of Sheraton Hotel for India branch. Since the day he landed in India and took charge at the hotel, he started experiencing certain difficulties. Robbin was finding it difficult to understand the way people communicate. This is because some gestures are interpreted differently in India from the way they are interpreted in the US. For instance, nodding the head in the US means yes to a question. In India,
nodding of the head can mean yes or no. Hence, he is struggling to give clear instructions to the workers who were Indians.
The second difficulty that Robbin is experiencing is eating the local food. He was also frustrated by different behaviors of the locals. Robbin is experiencing a totally different language, culture and value system. He could not understand why there was discrimination based on gender in the workplace.
