Case study

A newly establish community centre catering to young people is actively creating a safe space for attendees, many of whom have recently immigrated to Australia with their families. The centre strives to support these young individuals as they navigate their new life in a different country. The youth workers reported that many attendees expressed a desire for a better connection and integration into the community. Recognising this need, the centre has sought input from the local community on services that would support this aim.

Community members have voiced a number of suggestions for the centre to consider, including:

• The need for organised activities that could foster interactions and help them form connections.
• A desire for guidance and information on integrating into Australian culture.
• The need for a supportive network of people who can relate to those who have a challenging home environment experience.

1. The community centre, while passionate about serving the youth, also operates on a limited budget of $6,000 per quarter. Listed below are the cost of resources:

• Staff: $30/ hr
  • 2 staff are available at any given time to work.
• Cooking ingredients: $100/ session
• Drama workshops run by volunteers: $100/ session
• Event cost: $500/ event.

Organisational policies and procedures also dictate that there must be at least 2 adults present for every 10 young people. Nevertheless, the centre believes in the power of community involvement and recognises the freely available resources it harbours, such as volunteers and partnerships.

Part 2: Implementing a youth program plan
