Michelle and Jim are the co-owners, who are conducting Jessica's interview. Michelle and Jim identify as racially white, middle-aged, heterosexual, and able-bodied. They realize that most of their staff identify themselves in similar ways, making the team rather homogeneous. Michelle and Jim like the idea of increasing the diversity of the team, and they are bringing that hope to the hiring process. During Jessica's interview, Michelle says, "Tell us a little bit about yourself. Jessica talks about her education, her experience, and her professional goals. Jim chimes in to prompt Jessica a little further. He asks, Could you tell us more about your family and your upbringing? Where are you from, and where does your family come from? Confused, Jessica responds, Um, well, my family is from New Jersey. Michelle smiles and asks, What do you parents do for a living?
