CASE STUDY:

Founded in 2002, LinkedIn is an online platform that is used for professional networking. LinkedIn is a global organisation with over 16,000 employees and 30 offices around the world. Individuals and organisations can create profiles and personal or organisational brands within LinkedIn. The fundamental premise of the website is to create connections between members. At present LinkedIn has approximately 675 million members worldwide. LinkedIns vision statement is To create economic opportunity for every member of the global workforce. Their mission statement is to connect the world's professionals to make them more productive and successful. An individual profile on LinkedIn usually includes the following; a resume, an overview of work experience, education and training, tags for skills, a photo and endorsements from other members LinkedIn also allows organisations to create profiles. Organisations have some additional functionality that includes the ability to list jobs and search for potential candidates. Up until February 2020 Jeff Weiner was the CEO of LinkedIn. He guided LinkedIn through their initial public offering (float on the stock exchange) in 2011 and the acquisition of LinkedIn by Microsoft in 2016. Jeff has moved into the role of Executive Chairman and Ryan Roslansky has taken over as CEO. Jeff is currently very busy in his role as Executive Chairman and doesnt have a lot of time to oversee Ryans progress. Jeff and Ryan only meet during board meetings. Despite LinkedIns earnings increasing from US$78million to $7.5billion in the past 12 months, Ryans objective as CEO is to expand the sponsorship opportunities within LinkedIn and increase this profit base by at least a further 20%. As LinkedIns parent company Microsoft also owns Skype, Ryan is keen to explore opportunities of linking the two to enable LinkedIn users to use the LinkedIn platform for video conferencing by embedding Skype within LinkedIn. The worldwide coronavirus disaster has left ZOOM as a market leader in video conferencing and Ryan sees an opportunity to increase LinkedIns profits by embedding Skype into LinkedIn. Ryan thinks that they have to move fast in order to carve out market share before ZOOM becomes embedded into large organisations. The outcome of the project would be a new module within LinkedIn to make video conferencing calls. The project would need to be completed within three months in order retake some market share back from ZOOM. This video conferencing application within LinkedIn would be expected to run on a pricing model similar to ZOOM in that organisations pay a fee for their staff to use it. It is essential that the quality of the LinkedIn/Skype integration be perfect from day one, otherwise there could be serious reputational damage for both organisations. Jeff is seeking Board approval to invest $10 million-dollar into this project. Senior developer Jacob Evans has estimated based on other modules developed that there will be a similar number of lines of code to a previous sponsorship project run 3 years ago. Ryan has hired a project manager, Sue Collins, to prepare a project charter. The project charter will be presented to Jeff Weiner (the Executive Chairman) who will determine whether or not the project will receive funding. As the project manager, Sue has the job of setting the project up.
