Case Study Someone Solve This Problem.
Stan has really been advancing as a supervisor. Because Mary did not give up on him and recognizing that supervisors need several years to develop, she has continued to work with Stan to continue his learning. Now he seems to be facing his most difficult issue. One of his best (and favorite) employees, Mike has broken a company policy. Mike failed to shut down his machine at break time. This violation has a five-day suspension. Mike has been a long-time employee who has always been a team player and also a leader. Just last week, he had motivated the rest of the employees to work extra hours to meet a deadline. Stan does not think he could have gotten the same result from the shift, if Mike had not jumped on board and rallied the rest of the workers. To make matters worse, he knows Mike has a child with health problems and the family has a lot of additional expenses.
Stan is also facing another issue with this problem and that is another employee, Jackson was the one to report the violation. Jackson not only reported the violation to Stan but felt the need to announce it to other employees at break time. Jackson is supervised by Jim and has been a problem employee for Jim. Stan also knows that Mike is well liked by everyone and Jackson is an outsider. Any penalty that Mike would incur would be put on Jackson.
The policy gives Stan the ability to give Mike the five-day suspension or fewer days. Stan begins his investigation with calling Mike into his office to get his side of the story. Mike admits he had forgotten and indeed left the machine on.
Do not read this case study and think a rule is a rule. Every single name I have included in this case study has some part of this decision and will bear the consequences of this decision. Define the steps Stan needs to work through to make the final decision. Also think about how he will show his leadership style in making the decision. Hint in the end each of the four men will have a role to play with the rest of the employees.
