CE 442 Homework No.5
Spring 2024
A pipe manifold is shown to discharge treated wastewater to a river. The design flow is 35cfs. The diameter of all nozzles is 0.90ft. Neglect transition losses. The objective is to calculate the elevation of the contact basin above the river when Q=35 cfs. Assume constant Korif and pipe friction factor (f), and neglect minor losses.
a. Qualitatively plot the HGL and EGL.
b. Write a spreadsheet that will calculate the flow in each nozzle based on an assumed chlorine contact basin elevation. Guess different values of basin elevation to get Q=35 cfs or use GOAL SEEK to find this elevation.
c. Calculate EGL and Q in each orifice
e. When this system is first built, Qactual=15 cfs. Qualitatively describe how the hydraulics of the discharge will change.
e. GRAD STUDENTS ONLY: Use your spreadsheet to calculate basin elevation when Q=15 cfs.
