As anthropologists have discovered, there are serious shortcomings to the research strategy of living among the natives. What do you think the short coming may be? Consult a professional anthropologist in the university to see if he or she agrees with you. 2. We make a distinction in this chapter between pro forma and discretionary behavior on the part of the principal. Give three examples of each. Consider your own job. How much of what you do is pro forma and how much discretionary? Is a principals job more or less discretionary than yours? 3. As we went into the schools to gather our data on the work activities of principals, we kept an open mind about what was important to look for and what was good or bad about managerial behavior. Would it have been better to make our observations more structured, with some guidelines and specifications worked out in advance? If so, what would such a list sound like?
