Chi-square one variable test:
The chi-squared one-variable test is useful for determining if the proportion of responses in two or more categories is different from a specified frequency. For example, if you asked people whether they preferred bottled water or tap water, we could determine if the proportion of people who selected bottled water is different from 0.5 (i.e., is the proportion of people who selected bottled water different from the proportion of people who tap water.). This test can also be used when there are more than two categories (e.g. bottled water, filtered tap water, tap water).
- Consider the hypotheses for the test:
- Null: Proportion of responses is equal in all categories
- Alternative: Proportion of responses is not equal in all categories
- Under the Analyze option select Nonparametric Tests, then Legacy Dialogs, then Chi-square
- Analyze Nonparametric tests Legacy Dialogs Chi-square
- Move the response variable into the test variable list
- Make sure that in the Expected Values box, the All categories equal button is clicked on. This tests the null hypothesis that the proportion of responses in all categories is equal. You can also specify values here if your null hypothesis is something different.
- Make sure the expected range of responses reflects what is in the data set. For example, if your responses only range from 1, 2, and 3, you should enter 1 and 3 in the appropriate field even if you included 5 total response options on the survey.
- Click OK to run the analysis.
- Conduct chi-squared one variable tests for each of the three questions in the "sample survey data" file on page #2.
- State the null and alternative hypotheses. You can do this once for all three tests.
- Report each p value and state a conclusion for each test.
