Choosing the Appropriate Selection Tool

Human resource management includes all of the activities that a manager engages in to attract and retain employees and to ensure that they perform at a high level and contribute to the accomplishment of organizational goals. Recruitment and selection are the first components of a human resource management system. Recruitment and selection are used to attract and hire new employees who have the skills, abilities, and experiences that will help an organization achieve its goals. An effective recruitment and selection process allows the organization to hire the best individuals for achieving its goals.

Once managers develop a pool of applicants for open positions through the recruitment process, they need to determine whether each applicant is qualified for the position. Selection is the process by which managers determine each applicant's qualifications and his or her potential for performing well in a job. Various selection tools exist to help managers determine the viability of candidates. Each of these tools will be examined in the following exercise.
