class MGMT0308001_2022spring ORG DEV & BEHAVIOR

We have reached the part of the first half of the course where you will write your first Research Paper. I copied the assignment below which is located in the Feb. 10th-23rd Chapter 3 The Learning Style {Reference Survey Research Paper). There are extra days for this assignment since it should take a little longer then taking a test. But, you will need to write a five-page paper that combines completing the following areas.

Make sure to have different sections in your paper with a title for each section. That will help you to organize your paper. You should also use dobule-spacing which is an academic presentation - but makes a paper a little shorter for students to write.

To add one more possible section, you can keep a journal of your work for the next week or so - and tie it into the OB material in the first three weeks of the course.

1 Take the learning styles preference survey at http://www.educationplanner.org/students/self-assessments/learning-styles.shtml.

2. In addition, please be sure you have reviewed the table of contents for this organizational behavior textbook. How does this research assignment fit in with the rest of the topics in the course? What themes do you see? How do you think these topics affect your interactions with others? How might your learning style affect how youll approach this course?

This question is asking you how does your individual behavior/personality paper relate to the rest of the course? The Table of Contents shows you the entire course. I did mention the overall goals of the course and the defintion of OB in my initial Announcements.

3. Have you ever considered journaling or discussion forums as techniques for self-improvement and reflection? Complete the first part of your experience by describing your experience in OB chapters so far. Review Chapters 1-3 that have meaning in your work, educational, and personal life.

This question is asking what material from Chapters 1-3 relate to your experiences. Sometimes, in online courses we create a forum where students can discuss the OB topics. Or, some students keep a journal of their experiences at work. In this paper, you could create a forum of your work experiences - but how do they relate to Chapters 1-3.

4. Now, write down five action steps that you plan to take as you work through this book. Refer to these steps throughout the term and modify them as needed.

This question is asking what will you do to improve your work situation? I would provide suggesstions. But, the question is about yourself! How can you improve your individual work situation?

Table of Contents

Section 1: Definition of Organizational Behavior?

Section 2: What was the History OB Before COVID

Section 3: The Surge of Employer and Employee Team in The Early Phase of COVID

Section 4: The Great Resignation

Abstract

This Summary Section is often left blank until your research is completed. At this point though, you could have a paragraph to get you started. Notice that an Academic Paper is double-spaced. This makes it easier for your professor to read your paper. Plus, it helps the students since the paper is in essence shorter for the student to write.

This paper is a review of the classical approach of Organizational Behavior (OB) in the decade before COVID -19 in March 2020 started to spread across the globe and kill millions pf people. In the United States alone, over 900,000 people have passed away due to COVID.

The Definition of Organizational Behavior

The definition of Organization Behavior, commonly referred to as OB, has been rather consistent for the past twenty years. One definition of Organizational Behavior is the study of how people interact within groups and its principles are used to make businesses operate more effectively. Another definition includes Organizational Behavior (OB) as a multidisciplinary study of the employee interactions and the organizational processes that seek to create more efficient and cohesive organizations. Researchers in the disciplinary fields of psychology, sociology, social psychology, anthropology, political science and economics have all contributed to the research of Organizational Behavior.

The History of Organizational Behavior before COVID

The history of Organizational Behavior can be traced back to the Industrial Revolution. When Henry Ford setup factories and an assembly line to produce his Model T, the relationship between employers and employees was started. At first, the only goal was to produce the car off the factory line. But, as the employees became tired and disgruntled, the employees started to ask for rights in the factory. Frederick Winslow Taylor was brought into the factory and he supported the One Best Way to produce the car. Taylor went so far as to cut off pieces of shovel to lighten the weight of a shovel too see if the employee could move more dirt with a lighter shovel. There wasnt much concern for the happiness of the employees.

Only later, did consultants and researcher such as Mary Parker Follett learn to study what was the most effective way for employees to complete their job. She watched bricklayers and studies their habits such as where to stack the pile of bricks, how to most effectively apply the cement and so forth.

The Surge of Employer and Employee Team in The Early Phase of COVID

COVID was announced to the American public by March of 2020. Initially, schools and offices expected to remain open as normal. However, the seriousness of COVID required most employees to work from home. Zoom became the popular online method to teach and hold meetings from home. In Many cases, Zoom is still the platform which teammates and classmates communicate.

The front line workers were greatly affected by the spread of COVID. Nurses, healthcare workers, teachers, and retail workers were scared for their lives to work so closely with customers, students, and the general public. Management often offered extra salary, such as $2.00 more an hour during the height of COVID.

The Great Resignation

However, the increased pay was fairly quickly removed from the employees paycheck. They reacted by questioning if they were underpaid? Should they leave their jobs and look for a higher pay? Why not? Many businesses were actually growing during the pandemic. Those businesses needed new employees. So, they left their jobs. Some of the younger employees enjoyed the Stimulus Package offered by the U.S. Government to help stimulate the economy. Many older employees opted to retire and not work remotely or return to their job. This period in 2021 became known as the Great Resignation.

Conclusion

This paper researched how the history of Organizational Behavior is being affected by the COVID Pandemic of 2020. The decade before the pandemic was characterized by individuals, teams, and the organizations working in a pretty harmonious way. The number of employees represented by union has dropped for many years.

However, the narrative has changed since COVID appeared. Employees were sent home at the height of the pandemic. Those employees expected to be happy working from home. But, strangely enough, many of them looked forward to being able to work back in their office. Living and working in a bubble wasnt for every employee. Today, management and employees are unsure when they will return to a life where they drive to work and spend the day in the office with their coworkers and get a little bit of free time from their families.
