Communicating Effectively

You learned many principles in this chapter to help you improve your communication skills. This exercise reviews six of those principles and gives you a chance to see how you can use them to improve supervisory communications.

Instructions

Review the following list of communication principles:

a$.$ Use feedback to verify that your message has been received accurately.

b$.$ Practice active listening.

c$.$ Select an appropriate method for sending your message.

d$.$ Be tuned in to nonverbal messages.

e$.$ Be well prepared when speaking before a group.

f$.$ Understand the important role of informal communication in the workplace, particularly rumors, gossip, and the grapevine.

Read the scenarios and determine which of the communication principles the supervisor violated. In each blank provided, write the letter of that principle from the list in Step $1.$ The principle you choose should indicate the one that the supervisor could have used to achieve a more positive outcome. $($Hint: Each principle will be used only once; there is one most correct answer for each.$)$
