Coding in Python and using the Raspberry Pi camera, how can I detect a certain area that the camera sees and recognize if an object is on top of that specific area or not?

Bonus: How can I save that information onto the Raspberry Pi server to show that the area is "filled" if the camera sees something on top the area, or "empty" if there isn't anything on top of that area?
