Coffee maker FSD and CCT
A coffee maker has been studied for you, and its major working parts have been sketched out.
See the description below.
AutoDrip Coffee Maker
How it works: First, whole coffee beans are inserted into the clear grinder compartment on the
top of the machine. The beans are ground by rotating blades and dropped into the filter basket.
Next, the water compartment at the back of the machine is filled with the water. This water is run
down through a tube to the heater component at the bottom of the machine and then moved back
up to the top. The hot water is then run from tubes to a showering device which evenly disperses
the water over the filter basket and grounds. Once enough water runs through the grounds, the
resulting coffee drips from the filter basket directly into the carafe below. The carafe is kept warm
by a hot plate that gets its heat from the same heating mechanism that heats the water.
Make a Function Structure Diagram for this coffee maker and use a Concept Combination Table
to form new ideas for making coffee. Then use a screening matrix to rank the ideas. Follow these
steps:
Develop a function structure diagram with at least subfunctions Details aren't necessary,
but ensure you follow the EMS flow and specify which function corresponds to each part
of the flow.
Develop a concept combination table for each of the major functions at least functions
Each function should have solutions.
Generate at least variants for making coffee using the table. Show your traces through
the table.
Roughly sketch each variant and briefly describe how they work.
Develop a Decision Matrix to evaluate the variants. Use the original product as the
reference. Use these criteria: ease of use, ease of manufacture, cost to consumer, quality of
coffee, durability.
Briefly describe the highestranked variant and discuss its pros and cons.
Submit your Function Structure Diagram, Concept Combination Table, variants, completed
Decision Matrix, highestranked variant, and any necessary explanations.
