COL 101 Reflective Discussion Class #2: Mindset (Reflection #1)

To grow academically and professionally, you must learn to adopt the correct mindset. There is a saying you become what you believe. If you believe you cannot accomplish something, then your belief will come true. Understanding that you control your mindset is the first step in success both in college and your career.

In one or two paragraphs, respond to the following statements and questions.

• As a STEM student mathematics is a common denominator in every major (pun intended!). In the assigned reading (McGuire Ch. 6) there is extensive discussion about mathematical ability and mindset. Describe growth mindset as it applies to your success in a STEM major filled with difficult courses.

• On page 68 of the McGuire text, the author lists four strategies for changing a mindset. Which strategy is most meaningful and applicable to you? Why?

• Based on the assigned video on GRIT, is talent or effort more important for success? Share an experience from your past that supports this conclusion.

• You will have classes over the next year that will present challenges. What course do you envision being your most formidable challenge? How specifically will you apply both GRIT and a growth mindset to succeeding in this course?
