COMM ESSENTIALS 1016 1 Annotated Bibliography Assignment Due Date: Week #6-Sunday Mark ___/20 Percentage 20% Objective: This assignment will give students the opportunity to conduct research on a topic of their choice and organize this research into a bibliography. This is the starting point for the major essay in this course. Task After the library orientation session students will use the skills they have learned to form a simple list of three sources they may like to use for their summative essay due in week eleven. Each of the bibliographies should include a list of three sources in alphabetical order according to APA rules (try your best using your APA manual or Georgian's online guide). Students must find 1 book, 1 academic periodical, and 1 credible source of your choice. For the source of choice, students may use a variety of resources - academic articles, newspapers, online sources, but they should be of a scholarly standard, relevant, and as recent as possible. An example of a citation for an annotated bibliography is provided on page 2 of this document. Students must give the topic of their essay at the beginning of the bibliography. General Topics for Essay Students may write on a topic of their choosing, however the following topics are NOT PERMITTED: The Covid-19 pandemic and vaccines The media and fake news Environmentalism/climate change The impact of artificial intelligence Social media Video games and violence Mental Health Childhood obesity How to avoid being a victim of cybercrime Any student who knowingly or unwittingly writes a bibliography and/or essay on any of these topics will receive a mark of zero on the assignment. Late assignments will not be accepted for marks. An annotated bibliography or annotated bib is a bibliography (a list of books or other works) that includes descriptive and evaluative comments about the sources cited in your paper. These comments are also known as annotations. Each annotation should be approximately 100-200 words in length (one paragraph). An annotation may include the following information: A brief summary of the source The source's strengths and weaknesses Its argument/point Why the source is relevant in your field of study Its relationships to other studies in the field Information about the author's background Your personal conclusions about the source Example of Annotated Bibliography: D'Elia, G., Jorgensen, C., Woelfel, J., & Rodger, E. J. (2002). The impact of the Internet on public library use: An analysis of the current consumer market for library and Internet services. Journal of the American Society for Information Science and Technology, 53(10), 808-820. https://doi.org/10.1002/asi.10102 In this study, the researchers examined if the Internet had affected public library usage in the United States. This study is distinct because its researchers surveyed library nonusers as well as users. The major finding was that 75.2% of people who used the Internet also used the public library. However, the researchers surveyed only 3000 individuals in a population of millions; therefore, these results may not be statistically significant. However, this study is relevant because it provides future researchers with a methodology for determining the impact of the Internet on public library usage.
