According to (Lasse, 2015), competency is what is needed to be able to complete a specific task, or job role. For one to demonstrate competence, one must be able to perform a given task or skill with the right level of proficiency. Thus, competency is broken down into skills or task. Then each skill or task is described in terms of what it looks like and the required level of proficiency. Hence, performing certain task or skill at the targeted proficiency level is the way to achieve proficiency.
The term competency and performance were first brought about by the American linguist Noam Chomsky (Gupa & Singla 2011). Noam Chomsky described competency as having the psychological or mental capacity and performance is the production of the actual occurrence. Hence, while competency involves knowing what to do, performance involves doing what one knows. Furthermore, its is hard to assess competency without witnessing performance (Bilash,2009). Know the difference between competency and performance is useful as it allows those completing a new language.
Competency refers to the ability to do complete a skill. In most instances, companies highlight the competences or skills needed to carryout job responsibilities. While performance refers to the way in which the individual carries out the competency. This goes beyond one ability to do something, but whether they are doing it right. Hence, competency does not equal performance.
