Consequentialism Vs Deontology First, Explain what consequentialism is, how Utilitarianism fits into it, and how right action
Question:
Consequentialism Vs Deontology
First,
Explain what consequentialism is, how Utilitarianism fits into it, and how right action can be
determined by only focusing on the consequences of any given dilemma.
Go into detail about what Utilitarianism believes, the calculus, and illustrate it all with an
example of your own.
Second,
Explain what deontology is, how Kantianism fits into it, and how right action can be
determined by only focusing on the intent and action of any given dilemma.
Go into detail about what Kant believes, the CI, the differences between it and the HI, what it means to be autonomous and its relation to infringement, and illustrate it all with an example of your own.
Third,
Run these two moral instances through both Utilitarianism's system and Kant's system, and
illustrate each step and why those steps are important:
1) A person has a daughter with immunity to a certain deadly virus. To save all of the earth
from said virus, and develop an effective vaccine and treatment, the person must kill their own child. Should they do it?
2) A person sees a homeless man without shoes. The person has just returned from the shoe store, and has a new pair of shoes already purchased. The person intends on throwing the
old shoes away when he gets home. They see an opportunity to help this homeless man;
should they do it?
In one of these, both Kant and Utilitarians agree; in the other, Kant and Utilitarians disagree. Which is which, and why?
Finally,
Comment on your own insights regarding both deontology and consequentialism. Which
makes more sense to you? Do either of these align with your own already-established
morality?
