Consider the following three steps $($ numbered as $1,2$ and $3)$ process of ceramics at New Pittsburgh Factory show below, operated as worker paced line. The process is experiencing severe problems related to insufficiently trained workers $($ the three workers $,$ one at each of the steps $1,2$ and $3).$ Specifically, $20\%$ of the parts going through Step $1$ are badly processed by the operator. Rather than scrapping them, they are moved to a highly skilled Rework operator, who can correct the mistake and finish up the part piece completely with in $15$ minutes per unit at the rework step. The same problem occurs at step $2,$ where $10\%$ of the parts made are badly processed requiring $10$ minutes of work per unit at the rework step.
