CASE 30 Rhino Poaching in South Africa: Do National Parks Have Sufficient Resources to Fight Wildlife Crime? A. J. Markus Hofmeyr, the head of Veterinary Wildlife Services (VWS) for South African National Parks (SANParks), and lis leam were by default involved with a persistent crime problem that was harming the rhinoceros population within South Africa's largest park, Kruger National. The onslaught for wildlife poaching across Africa had not slowed down since 2007, with more than 1,200 rhino slain in 2015 alone. Although Ilofineyr and his team had allocated time toward solving wildlife crime on the veterinary and translocation side of things, it was not a primary resource requirement before poaching started (see Exhibit 1). The department used signifi- cant resources to implement the biological manage- ment plan to help offset some of the poaching losses. Ilofmeyr's team was significantly involved with the biological management of rhino. From 2008 until to 2015 over 5.940 African rhino had been poached leaving only approximately 26,000 rhino still alive in Africa.
