Continue with a given DMT data for HW#2
On a field site where DMT was conducted, square footing , thickness t=1m with a rough base
is to be constructed at a depth of 1 m . Assume that the footing is concentrically loaded and that groundwater has
no effect on bearing capacity.
Based on DMT data, the soils in this field site can be assumed to have 3 layers: sandy soil layer (5.8m),
clayey soil layer (5.8m16.5m), and sandy soil layer (16.5m30.5m).
Use the averaged values of soil properties for each soil layer. For the top sandy layer, determine the unit
weight for the soil above groundwater table and that for the soil below the groundwater table.
Assume cohesion, which is assumed equal to the undrained shear strength, is zero for sandy soil.
a. Evaluate the ultimate bearing capacity using a simplified Terzaghi's bearing capacity equation.
b. Calculate the vertical stress increase beneath the center of a square footing area with a vertical load 4 MN
applied to the footing using an approximate method, and plot the vertical stresses with depths (You can
continue working on the HW#2 DMT data Excel sheet).. Unit weight of concrete is 23.6kNm3.
c. Calculate the settlement of the foundation on this site due to the consolidation settlement of the clayey
layer. For the preconsolidation stress p' and vertical effective stress zo' values in clayey soil layer, use the
stress values on DMT data Excel sheet that you already calculated for HW#2. Make sure to use a proper
equation after evaluating fin' and p' values. Assume Cc=0.4 and Cr=0.05.
