CORE NETWORK EMULATOR

Task 1: Assign IP addresses

Assign IP addresses to the machines as follows.

Greek network (10.0.0.0/24)

alpha 10.0.0.101
beta 10.0.0.102
gamma 10.0.0.103
router-stargate (eth0) 10.0.0.1

Alien network (192.168.0.0/24)

cylon 192.168.0.101
klingon 192.168.0.102
router-stargate (eth1) 192.168.0.1

Guardian network (1.1.1.0/24)

guardian 1.1.1.2
router-stargate (eth2) 1.1.1.1

Task 2: Routing

Setup routing tables and rules such that the following connectivity is achieved.

  • Any IP should be "ping"-able from any other IP, except between the following pairs of machines: beta and cyclon, beta and klingon, gamma and cylon, and gamma and klingon. This means that no machine in the Greek network, except alpha, can reach machines in the Alien network, and vice versa.
  • All communication between any of the three Greek hosts (alpha, beta, gamma) and any of the two Alien hosts (cylon, klingon) must be routed through guardian. You can use traceroute to verify this.
  • All decisions on which Greek host is allowed to communicate with the Alien hosts, and vice versa, must be taken using the guardian's routing rules. For example, if beta tries to contact cylon, the request must travel to guardian, who will then decide to not forward it any more. Hence, guardian is able to monitor any allowed, as well as, prohibited communication attempts between Greek hosts and Alien hosts.
