The Community Value Index is used to measure the value that a hospital is providing to the community. It tracks four main areas including financial viability and plant reinvestment, hospital cost structure, hospital charge structure, and hospital quality performance. The Community Value Index is beneficial in assessing hospital performance as it benefits the overall functioning of the hospital by reinvesting back into the organization and suggests high quality care for patients. The Community Value Index is a way to ensure that hospitals are providing value back to the community when financially able, reinvesting back into the organization, maintains reasonable costs, and provides high quality care back to the patients of the community (Newhouse, et.al,2013).
Within the four main areas there are ten different measures used to track the hospitals performance. Within each category of the CVI a hospital is given a score to track performance, in which higher scores indicate higher performance (Cleverley, et.al,2023). The first core area is financial viability and reinvestment which assesses things like profitability, reinvestment, efficiency, and assessment of hospital finance (Cleverley, et.al,2023).
The overall goal is for a hospital to excel in each of these four categories to provide the best overall value back to the community.
