One of the articles of faith in creative research and practice is the one that points out that the left side of the brain is governed by the analytical, rational thinking, the right hemisphere underlies creative thinking. However, judging by a recent review of research in neuropsychology, this accepted wisdom is false. Neuropsychologists studied creativity by asking people to participate in creative thinking, which were measured in different ways. In the Remote Associates test, people indicate which word links a series of three words. Other tests ask people to write creative stories, write subtitles for animated films, or provide unique solutions to unusual hypothetical problems. While participants are thinking creatively, researchers assess their brain activity using various techniques, including MRI. A recent review of 72 studies found that right brain activity was not associated with creative thinking. The authors conclude: "Creativity, or any supposed stage of it, is not particularly associated with the right hemisphere of the brain or any part of the right hemisphere of the brain." In fact, the review showed that it was difficult to isolate creative thinking in any region of the brain. Another review of 45 studies came to the same conclusion, taking into account that the various ways in which creativity and brain activity were measured make generalizations difficult. These results do not discourage neuropsychologists. A neurologist, Oshin Vartanian, summarized the literature as follows: "At first, a lot of people looking for the holy grail.
