We realize how much we take into consideration and take for granted our perceptions of the world, when we try to see it through the eyes of someone who grew up in a culture totally different from our own. For example, people see the passage of time very differently in different cultures. Some cultures tend to focus more on the past, others on the future. Li-Jun Ji and his colleagues investigated how the Chinese perceive events concerning Canadians' perceptions. Participants read the description of a robbery, along with descriptions of events that occurred in the distant past, recent or current past. In attempting to resolve the case, Chinese participants were more likely to rely on the events of the recent past and distant past, while Canadians were more attentive to recent events. Even the way we visualize the passage of time is different in all cultures. Lera Boroditsk, Orly Fuhrman, and Kelly McCormick of Stanford University examined how English-speaking Americans and Mandarin (Chinese) speakers differ in their perception of time. Because in English phrases like "look ahead" or events are used" or leave the past behind us, Americans tend to think of time as a horizontal timeline. In mandarin, however, he uses words like Shang (top) and xia (bottom) to refer to time, so events accumulate on a stack. Could this difference in language structure explain why Chinese speakers pay more attention to history when thinking about events?
