Potato chips made with the fake fat olestra performed better than regular chips in a study in todays Journal of American Medical Association (JAMA).

Olestra glides through the body without leaving any fat and calories. Chips made with Olestra, which are being test marketed in several cities, have been the focus of much debate since their 1996 debut. Critics charge that the chips cause digestive problems, cramping, and loose stools in some people who eat them.

Participants could eat as much as they wanted; they didnt know which chips they were eating. Both groups ate comparably: the olestra group ate an average of 2.75 ounces, and the regular group ate an average of 2.76 ounces. The regular group (average age 32) had an older age profile than the olestra group (average age 26). On a 9-point taste test scale, the two chips were rated comparably: an average of 6.24 for olestra chips versus an average of 6.21 for regular chips. Within four days after the test, all participants were contacted by an independent marketing firm and asked if they had any digestive symptoms. The findings: 10.8% of those who ate the olestra chips said they had one or more gastrointestinal symptoms, such as gas and diarrhea; so did 20.6% of those who ate the regular chips. Olestra chips 1, regular chips 0
