D$.$ Diffusion

When people move or migrate they often carry new ideas, clothing styles, or even new technologies with them. The physical spread of such ideas, cultural traits, innovations, and even diseases through the movement of people, such as migration, is referred to as relocation diffusion. However, phenomena can also spread in many other ways including hierarchically, contagiously, and through stimulus.

Hicrarchical diffusion involves the trickling down of phenomena from the socially elite or from large nodes or centres to the rest of society. For example, a new idea or style may first appear in New York and quickly become adopted in Toronto, then Vancouver and eventually trickle down to Edmonton and to other smaller centres. Contagious diffusion refers to the rapid spread of phenomena due to direct exposure or personal contact. The spread of disease is perhaps the most commonly cited example of contagious diffusion, but the contagious diffusion of ideas, news or trends also occurs through social media. Stimulus diffusion is when a new idea, innovation or cultural trait is adopted by another person or society but is given a new or unique form.
