Daily Writing 3 is a pre-writing activity using a comparison-contrast method organizer. Throughout your life, you will use comparisons to assist you in making decisions. For instance, you may compare and contrast the platform of various political parties should you choose to participate in the political process. As a consumer, you will compare and contrast the quality, price, and overall value of commercial products. In the academic arena and in the employment world, you will often be required to use your best judgment to discern between two viewpoints or policies. Writing a comparison-contrast essay will sharpen your evaluation skills. Doing so will also enable you to fully elaborate and defend your judgment. In other words, the processes involved in writing this essay hone your critical thinking skills. Instructions: Complete a comparison-contrast organizer using either a subject-by-subject pattern or a trait-by-trait (also known as the point-by-point) method. Then, develop a thesis statement and a concluding sentence based on your evaluations. You are to choose a topic/subject matter conducive to comparison and contrast. (See the list of ideas below; however, you do not have to choose from this list.) Use at least three criteria (elements) to determine how your subjects are alike and/or how they are different. You may use the graphic organizer below or create your own using figure 14.4 in The College Writer, p. 248. You need to complete either the subject-by-subject or trait-by-trait method, but not both. You must include your thesis statement, which will ultimately go at the end of your introductory paragraph. You must also construct at least one concluding sentence. Although an "example" is provided, your organizer should be more detailed. In the end, it will contain most of the information you need to develop your body paragraphs when you write the comparison-contrast essay in Formal Essay 3.
